3R Games has revealed Thailand’s Tham Luang Cave as the next real-world cave coming to VR, as the studio also announced its first paid supporter DLC, released a major Meta Quest update, and confirmed the game has now surpassed 110,000 copies sold worldwide.
Cave Crave is a VR spelunking title from 3R Games that’s been building out its “Real Caves in VR” initiative - bringing real-world underground locations into the game as faithful, non-gamified experiences.
Following the reception to the Nutty Putty Cave virtual tour released in 2025, 3R Games says it’s expanding “Real Caves in VR” with Tham Luang, which became globally known after the 2018 rescue of a teenage football team trapped inside the cave after sudden flooding. After virtualizing Nutty Putty in 2025 with Brandon Kowallis involved on the VR recreation team, 3R Games says it has invited two experts to collaborate on the Tham Luang project: Vern Unsworth, described as an experienced cave diver directly involved in the 2018 rescue effort, and Roo Walters, described as a 3D cave-scanning specialist. The studio says the goal is for the Tham Luang VR experience to be accurate and presented with full cultural and historical context.
“Our goal remains the same,” said 3R Games CEO Piotr Surmacz. “We want to let players experience the scale, atmosphere, and complexity of iconic underground spaces from the inside - without turning real-life events into gameplay.” The Tham Luang cave experience is planned to arrive as the second real-life map in Tourist Mode, with a release date to be announced.
Alongside the cave reveal, 3R Games has launched its first paid DLC, the Backer’s Pack, available now for $9.99. The studio describes it as direct support for continued real-world cave recreations, and says backers receive eight cohesive equipment skins designed to stand out - especially with the game’s upcoming multiplayer mode, where players will be able to show their gear in-session.
A major update is also available now for Meta Quest, adding a new Story Mode map inspired by ideas Surmacz gathered through discussions with Reddit users, plus a wide range of quality-of-life improvements aimed at making underground exploration smoother, more comfortable, and more immersive.
Cave Crave’s Tham Luang Tourist Mode map is planned, with a release date “announced soon,” while the Backer’s Pack DLC and the new Meta Quest update are available now.
