Bootstrap Island leaves Early Access and hits full release on Steam March 12, 2026

Bootstrap Island is a Robinson Crusoe-inspired VR survival adventure built exclusively for PC VR, focused on highly immersive, hands-on survival systems and a narrative-driven castaway experience.

Maru VR says Bootstrap Island will officially leave Early Access and launch in full release on Steam on March 12, 2026, and the studio notes the game’s price will increase with the move to full release to reflect its expanded scope and added content.

Full release is described as the game’s largest update yet, expanding both story and gameplay systems. A major addition is the introduction of a local tribe, complete with their own tools and weapons, alongside a trading and communication system that allows players to build relationships that can become friendly or hostile. The update will also deliver the complete story of the survivor through cinematic cutscenes and voice actors, including details about his past, the circumstances of the shipwreck, and “possible futures” for the character.

On the gameplay side, Maru VR says full release adds a new boss encounter, additional weapons, expanded survival mechanics, and more layered combat possibilities, alongside broad optimizations and improvements to overall gameplay feel and narrative depth. The announcement also highlights Custom Mode, which allows players to adjust difficulty and intensity to match their preferred playstyle, whether they want a tougher survival challenge or a more relaxed, exploration-focused experience.

Bootstrap Island stars Daniel, described as a 17th-century merchant with no survival experience who becomes stranded on an uncharted tropical island and must adapt to survive.

Bootstrap Island is developed by Maru VR, an Estonia-based indie studio focused exclusively on VR. Maru VR says it has created more than 40 location-based VR games and experiences since 2016, and that Bootstrap Island is its first full-featured premium VR title, which entered Early Access in February 2024.
